WA Leads the Nation: 196 Open Government Tenders in September 2026
More than one in four open tenders in Australia right now is a Western Australian one. From prisons to power purchase agreements, here's what the surge looks like — plus the pick of what's closing interstate.

There are 706 open government tenders across Australia as of 2 September 2026, and the jurisdiction breakdown tells an unusual story: Western Australia alone accounts for 196 of them — comfortably ahead of NSW (125), Queensland (115), Victoria (76) and the federal AusTender pipeline (73). For a state with a tenth of the country's population, that is a striking share of the national pipeline, and much of it closes within the next week or two.
Why WA is running hot
Two buyers explain a lot of the volume. The Department of Housing and Works is pushing out a steady stream of school and public-building packages — modular classroom installations, CCTV upgrades, air-conditioning replacements and fit-outs — while Programmed Facility Management is tendering maintenance and refurbishment work across schools and corrective services sites. Layered on top are panel arrangements from Main Roads Western Australia and common use arrangements from the Department of Treasury and Finance. WA highlights closing 8–9 September
Casuarina Prison — Infrastructure Upgrade Works, tendered by Programmed Facility Management, closes 9 September — a substantial corrective-services construction package. The same buyer has the Ashfield Primary School Comprehensive HVAC Replacement, ACM Remediation and Roof Renewal Project closing 8 September.
On the government-buildings side, the Department of Housing and Works has the Joondalup Police Academy Block L Refurbishment closing 9 September, alongside smaller works such as the East Victoria Park Education Support Centre modular classroom installation.
Two standouts beyond construction: the Western Australia Police Force wants a Video & Data Analytics Business Case (closes 9 September) — a genuine opening for data and advisory firms — and Synergy's Expression of Interest for Power Purchase Agreements and Renewable Energy Supply Arrangements closes 8 September, one of the more strategically interesting energy tenders in the country right now. Main Roads WA also has a Panel Contract for the Provision of Driver Training Services closing 8 September.
Queensland: rail work and Olympic-adjacent early works
Queensland Rail is the buyer to watch. Its Professional Electrical Engineering Services Panel closes 22 September and the 1720 Locomotive Life Extension Stage 1 Works 2026 closes 27 September — both with enough runway left to prepare a proper bid. Closer deadlines: the Expression of Interest for Sunshine Coast Stadium Early Works (Demolition) from the Games infrastructure authority closes 8 September, as do QBuild's Rockhampton New Neighbourhood Centre construction and the Cairns Courthouse HVAC and Mechanical Upgrade.

NSW: bridges, tunnels and a food panel
Transport Infrastructure Projects has a cluster closing 9 September: the B6008 Bridge Repaint at Whelans Swamp, Fire Systems Maintenance for the Northern Tunnels and Coffs Harbour Tunnels, an Electrical Design Review for Harwood Bridge and Wardell Bridge, and Traffic Data Collection Services on the M1 Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads and Byron Bay. It is a reminder that NSW transport work is not all mega-projects — plenty of it is discrete, contractor-sized packages.
Also closing 9 September: the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Panel for the Supply of Bulk Dry and Cooked Food Products to CSI — a long-running supply opportunity for food wholesalers.
Federal and Victorian picks
Federally, Services Australia's NDIA Salesforce Backup and Disaster Recovery Solution closes 8 September, and the Australian Taxation Office's Tax Policy Research Data Lab closes 9 September — both squarely in IT and ICT territory, browsable alongside the rest of the federal pipeline.
In Victoria, Monash Health's Ultrasound Tender for the New Pakenham Hospital and Gippsland Water's WWTP Stage 1 Dewatering Upgrade construction both close 8 September.
The pattern: panels are stacking up before the summer
Look across this fortnight's list and one theme repeats: panels and standing arrangements. Queensland Rail's engineering panel, Main Roads WA's driver training and materials testing panels, the NSW food supply panel, Treasury and Finance common use arrangements in WA. Agencies are locking in their supplier lists before the end of the calendar year, and panel deadlines are the ones that punish procrastination hardest — miss one and the door can stay shut for three to five years.
