Defence, Health and the ATO all have significant tenders closing in the next five days — and the states are stacking deadlines onto Monday 31 August. Here's what's on the clock.

August is going out with a crunch. Of the 687 government tenders currently open across Australia, 274 close within the next fortnight — and an unusual number of the big federal ones are due before 1 September. Defence, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, and the Australian Taxation Office all have significant procurements closing in the next five days, while the states have piled deadlines onto Monday 31 August.

Defence: a fighter jet program and three base works packages
The headline is hard to beat. FUTURE LEAD-IN FIGHTER, released by the Department of Defence's Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, closes Sunday 30 August. Lead-in fighter programs shape RAAF pilot training for decades — and the supplier ecosystems that form around them (simulation, sustainment, training services) are where most Australian businesses will actually participate.
Defence's Security and Estate Group also has three facilities packages closing this week: HMAS Stirling System Works, WA and RAAF East Sale Infrastructure Upgrades, VIC both close Friday 28 August — too tight to start a fresh bid now, but worth noting if you already hold documents — while Russell Offices North and South Gate Works, ACT runs until Monday 31 August. Health and digital: Canberra's other big closings
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing closes two notable processes on Friday 28 August: Delivery of the National Cancer Screening Register — one of the more consequential health technology contracts in the country — and a Notice of Intent for a Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and support services panel, the kind of panel arrangement that quietly determines who wins advisory work for years.
At the ATO, the Budgeting and Reporting Solution (BaRS) software tender closes Monday 31 August, and the federal infrastructure department is seeking Infrastructure Construction Cost Assurance Support Services the same day. Add the Australia-Pacific Partnership for Energy Transition Delivery Centre from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (also 31 August) and the Australian Signals Directorate's Apprentice Training tender (1 September), and it is a genuinely busy week for IT, ICT and professional services suppliers in the federal market.
NSW: corrections education, Vivid Sydney and a Menangle Road study
New South Wales stacks most of its deadlines on Monday 31 August. The largest service opportunity is Education and Vocational Training Services to CSNSW from the Department of Communities and Justice — delivering education inside the state's correctional system. Insurance and Care NSW is buying again too, with Lifetime Care and Support Scheme — Case Managers and Care Needs Assessors closing the same day.
On the infrastructure side, Transport Infrastructure Projects wants Menangle Road Upgrade — Concept Design and Environmental Study Services, and Albury City Council closes its Albury Main Sewer Pump Station & Rising Main construction tender, both on 31 August. And in a more colourful corner of the market, Destination NSW is shopping for the Vivid Sydney Fire Kitchen — 2027, 2028, 2029 (31 August) and Vivid Sydney — Crane Services (1 September). Queensland: an ICT managed services EOI and a sports precinct partner
Queensland's most interesting closing is the Expression of Interest — Road Safety Systems Program (RSSP) ICT Managed Services from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, closing Sunday 30 August — the systems behind the state's road safety camera network are a long-run managed services prize.
Also on 30 August: Griffith University seeks a Logan Multi-Sports Precinct — Development Partner, and the environment department closes its Expression of Interest — Broken River Ecotourism Precinct. TMR's Expression of Interest — Central West District Future Program of Works follows on 31 August — a forward-works EOI that effectively decides who gets invited to price regional road packages later. Civil contractors should keep an eye on Queensland tenders.
Victoria, WA and the NT: the pick of the rest
In Victoria, Supply and Fitting of Tyres to Victoria Police Vehicles closes Friday 28 August — a fleet-wide term contract — alongside the FY27 Linemarking Program — Loddon Mallee Region Package 1 from the Department of Transport and Planning. Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water's Piangil Dissolved Air Flotation Facility Contract runs to 31 August; more at Victorian tenders.
In WA, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure closes Connecting Schools Grant Infrastructure on 31 August — see WA tenders. And the NT closes two long-service contracts the same day: the Department of Health's Panel Contract for Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS) Services and a 36-month Repairs and Maintenance of Security, CCTV and Duress Systems contract for the Alice Springs region. The Territory is a smaller market with far less bidding competition — worth a look at NT tenders.
The pattern: deadlines cluster at month end
Two things stand out this week. First, agencies visibly clear their desks before the month ticks over — Monday 31 August alone carries more closings than most full weeks, across every jurisdiction. If you only check portals weekly, a month-end Monday is exactly where you miss things. Second, the federal closings skew heavily toward long-duration commitments: a fighter training program, a national screening register, a panel arrangement, an apprenticeship program. Federal buyers are locking in multi-year relationships before the September quarter — and the suppliers who respond this week will be hard to displace later.
